Victim Blaming In Singapore

By Gregory Low - December 28, 2013

Hi Internet,

I guess I didn't mention this in my previous post, but I might be spamming tonight, for the first time, and it ain't good.

Let's talk about rape/sexually molested - sounds weird eh?

I originally wanted to write a social commentary on how many differing views Singaporeans have about girls wearing sexy clothes in public. It was going to be fascinating because we have point of views from the religious, the conservatives, the liberal Singaporeans, those who demand privacy, and so on etc.
But I just have to address these particular group of disgusting people who have the mentality that the way a girl’s dress dictates if she deserves to be raped/sexually molested or not.
Let me make this clear for you Neanderthals. NO ONE deserves to be raped, EVER! Even if a girl is walking buck naked in an MRT doesn’t give anyone the right to force him or herself upon the girl.
Do you know that this is the kind of mentality that is driving the rape culture in India right now? I can’t believe some Singaporeans actually think like those rapists?
The issue here is slut shaming/victim blaming and is a very big issue as it is the most commonly shared view among conservatives. It is like saying an old grandmother deserved to be robbed because she is wearing jewelry or a person deserved to have his/her car stolen because it is too good looking.

A little lesson here, Rape is not triggered by how a person dresses. Rape is initiated by the rapist to dominate a person in order to fulfill his sexual desire.  It can happen to anyone of any age wearing anything.
What slut shaming/victim blaming does is transferring the guilt of the attacker to the victim, thus absolving the attacker. The latest and biggest story of Victim Blaming happened in an American college where the school refuse to help with investigation of the rape because majority of the faculty members believe that it was the victim’s fault she was raped.
It was only after getting major media support that investigation finally got under way.
Aside from that, victim blaming is the primary reason why some rape cases goes unreported. The victim’s belief that it was her fault she was raped causes the real rapist to walk free to rape another victim.
Long story short, NO! NO ONE DESERVES TO BE RAPED OR SEXUALLY ASSAULTED NO MATTER HOW SHE DRESSES. PERIOD. TOTALLY!
Aside from that, you can judge all you want if she is too provocative or not, besides - everyone is a fashion critic. And no, people who took those pictures are not perverts. Anyone has the rights to take your picture as long as you’re in public. If not , journalists needs to ask permission from everyone before they post on news paper or online news. And finally my religious friends, a girl showing her ass is not a sign that the end times is near. That's just stupid.
I mean literally, I can take this as an example
The highly popular Internet babe claimed that she firmly believed in the apocalypse in the year 2012, hence her decision of her nude photos to seek a sense of “carnival” and “freedom”. According to Zhang You’s own handwriting, the model was hoping that everyone would remember her before the apocalypse happens. Along with her nude photos, Zhang You took a picture of her “Apocalypse Manifesto” 末日宣言, signed by herself. This set of Zhang You’s topless pictures have been circulated all over the Chinese Internet since last month. While some did not seem to believe the reason behind her action, most netizens supported Zhang You’s wish to “free” herself.

So yup, once again,it ain't the end of the world
